Most baseball fans would be thrilled to attend a Japanese baseball game, but the event can still be enjoyed even if you’re not the biggest fan.
American baseball games consist of bubble gum, hot dogs and peanuts, yet in Japan, baseball games are much more entertaining for the fans, who are entertained by performances, cosplays and bentos. The SJMC Japan team had the chance to go watch the Yomiuri Giants versus the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles at Tokyo Dome. Tokyo Dome is an indoor baseball stadium that is one of Japan’s biggest stadiums with a capacity of 55,000.
Before the baseball game even began, a show was presented to entertain the audience. There were cosplayers performing a show, and many couldn’t help but feel entranced by their singing and dancing. Not only are there cosplayers, but there are also cute cheerleaders who also put on such a show! During the whole game, there were cute young women serving mostly alcohol to the crowd. Not only do the performers entertain the crowd, but the crowd puts on a great display as they wave huge flags. These people are truly hyped up about these baseball games.
Around the Tokyo Dome, there are food options as well as multiple merchandise items to buy. There were many food options that most people wouldn’t see in America, such as sushi, curry and rice bowls. If Japanese people wanted a taste of what American baseball food tasted like, one could find hot dogs for them just like in America.
Little merch stores sold many different unique items that one couldn’t find at American baseball games. Many Japanese people walk around carrying banners to take pictures with or to show off on the big screen. When the performers come on stage, many people would wave their glow sticks with different colors.
Some people can even buy Japanese baseball trading cards, just like how Americans like trading cards, but with Major League Baseball players in the United States. In the entrance before going in, there is a huge store for Giants jerseys and caps. These items are extremely expensive as jerseys can be high quality. Getting a high-quality Giants jersey can cost about $145 each. There are a lot of choices for merchandise, best to get ready to pull out those wallets.
Once the SJMC Japan team came back all together, they shared how, compared to American baseball games, it was nothing as fascinating as Japanese baseball games. They were completely captivated by the experience of a Japanese baseball game and the spirit of all the fans. While waiting, a group of Giants fans placed their hands together in a group and raised their hands high, cheering their group’s name. The SJMC Japan team decided to do the same thing as they were still filled with adrenaline.
In the end, unfortunately, the Giants lost 2-0, but that didn’t sour the experience for a non-baseball fan at a Japanese baseball game.
