Located in the heart of Shibuya, across from a giant mega store sits G-Club Shibuya.

It is a specialty guitar store that attracts musicians from across Japan and around the world. Unlike many general music stores, G-Club Shibuya focuses heavily on guitars and everything else you can possibly think of and more related to guitars. It offers a wide selection of instruments from major brands and even custom builders and musicians. The store has become well known among guitar musicians and enthusiasts across the world because of its large inventory of six floors and friendly and helpful staff.

On a recent visit to the store by a group of SJMC Japan students, some were more interested than others. For one student, the store would be the subject of an Instagram reel for the program, while a few others were not particularly interested in guitars. But as they walked through those doors, they noticed the smell of exotic wood and glue, and experienced a music store like no other.

In 1936, Tsunesaburo Kurosawa was born and raised in Tokyo and helped his father craft violins before he pivoted to crafting classic guitars. In the 1950s, he would travel all the way to way to Spain to learn more about guitar making, even visiting one of the most renowned, The Ramirez Workshop.

After years of study, he returned home to open his own workshop to build handmade guitars that were praised for their craftsmanship and tone. Due to his fame, he recognized that he needed a place to properly distribute and showcase his product.

He would end up starting his own storefront, which eventually expanded into multiple locations across Japan. This was the foundation for the company he formed known as T. Kurosawa and Company, or commonly known as Kurosawa Gakki. It became one of Japan’s largest musical instrument retailers. He would then form G-Club Shibuya from his parent company in 2009. Tsunesaburo Kurosawa died in 2025 and to this day his 1960s-70s guitars are still highly sought-after by collectors.

One of the most famous aspects of G-Club Shibuya is the variety of guitars available throughout its six floors. Customers can find electric guitars, acoustic guitars, basses, ukuleles, amplifiers and accessories from manufacturers across the guitar scene. The store serves musicians of all skill levels, from beginners looking for their first instrument to experienced players searching for rare or professional grade equipment. Its extensive selection allows visitors to compare their models and what they need to have the perfect string playing instrument.

The location of G-Club Shibuya also most definitely contributes to its popularity. Shibuya is Tokyo’s most iconic and famous district in entertainment and cultural districts, known for its shopping, music scene and youth culture. Because of this, the store benefits from a steady flow of visitors interested in music. The surrounding area contains numerous music clubs, restaurants and bars, making G-Club Shibuya an important part of the area’s musical community.

Overall, G-Club Shibuya stands out as one of Tokyo’s best destinations for guitar players. It’s a very convenient location, it has a large selection of guitars, and its reputation among famous musicians have helped it become a respected name in Japan’s music industry. For anyone interested in guitars or just starting to get into the music scene, G-Club Shibuya offers a the experience that can reflect the creative atmosphere of Shibuya itself.
