When you decide to go on a trip to Japan, there are many things you need to do to prepare.

Something that helps with planning a big trip like this is Instagram reels, which are quick and informative videos that you can save to a folder and watch later. It allows for you to access a lot of information without having to search through multiple articles all over the internet.

It’s especially convenient because after you continuously give likes to similar content, Instagram’s algorithms will start to provide you more videos. While I was scrolling through Instagram reels, I kept seeing some very interesting desserts and themed cafes. One of the most bizarre restaurants that I have repeatedly seen on my feed is Imo Pippi.

Imo Pippi is a restaurant where they create desserts using potatoes. It has four items on the menu, three of which use baked sweet potato. The items include baked sweet potato brulee, baked sweet potato with honey butter, baked sweet potato with ice cream and one-millimeter silk thread purple potato and ice cream. I ended up purchasing the baked sweet potato brulee and the one-millimeter silk thread purple potato and ice cream seeing as they looked the most intriguing and unique.

When I took a bite into the brulee, I was expecting cream mixed with sweet potato, but all I got was disappointment. The layer of cream was so thin that all I could taste was burnt sugar and dry potato. The burnt sugar indirectly enhanced the dryness of the potato and since there was not enough cream, it was unsalvageable, in my opinion. This dessert was a major failure and a letdown of expectations that had been building for weeks. Unfortunately, the price seems to be the saving grace of this dessert, coming to a grand total of 750 yen or about $4.78. I would not purchase this dessert again, but that doesn’t mean that this experience was a total loss.

When you order the one-millimeter silk thread purple potato, you get to see them create the treat along with the ice cream. It makes for an almost interactive and memorable process. Watching the noodles come out is so interesting because the texture is sort of like Play-Doh, but frail.

When I finally tried the one-millimeter silk thread purple potato and ice cream, I was unexpectedly taken with how scrumptious it was. This dish offered what the other one was missing: hydration and sweetness. The vanilla ice cream is the perfect paring to those potato noodles. Unluckily, the cheap rate did not continue for the whole menu. The price of this one dessert was 1,400 yen, roughly $9.

In the end, it seems what you pay for is what you get. Personally, I think purchasing the noodles was worthwhile and I would do it again. If someone were to ask me what was a unique dessert experience that stood out, I would reference Imo Pippi’s one-millimeter silk thread purple potato. I think that it’s something that you can only try once in a lifetime, so if you get the chance you should take it!
