We are thrilled to announce the new group of students in the Texas State SJMC Japan program!

Thirteen undergraduate students and one graduate student are onboard for the two-week program scheduled for June.

Here they are with their majors:

Angie Vasquez (Mass Communication graduate student)
Peyton Bayne Long (Electronic Media)
Amanda Cabrera (Electronic Media)
Kendall Casanova (Public Relations)
Cat Chan (Human Development and Family Sciences)
Stefan Chupp (Digital Media Innovation)
Miya Coleman (Journalism)
Trinity Eilert (Digital Media Innovation)
Aidan Fitzpatrick (Digital Media Innovation)
Arman Hopkins (Advertising)
Nat Lopez (Digital Media Innovation)
Azuli Rodriguez (Digital Media Innovation)
Patrick Scoulios (Electronic Media)
Vince Teran (Digital Media Innovation)

The group has met twice for orientation meetings, most recently on April 4, to get to know each other a little bit better. We also shared important details about the two classes students will take as part of the program – feature writing taught by Martinez and mobile storytelling taught by Jon Zmikly. In the feature writing class, students will write daily blog posts, feature stories about Tokyo, Hiroshima and Kyoto, and a personal travel essay. In the mobile storytelling class, students will create posts, stories and reels on Instagram, utilizing multimedia to document the program in Japan.

As students finish up classes in the spring semester, we’ll continue our preparations for Japan. We plan to add photos and short bios for each student in late May, and then we’ll have regular daily blog posts during our time in Japan from June 3 to 14.

Huge shout-out to SJMC Japan 2024 alumni who joined us for two orientation meetings in February and April to share their experiences and invaluable tips. They were Kaylie Kruk, Colton Winters, Lauren Reid and Laura Restrepo Posada, pictured above (left to right) with Martinez.
