Hello! My name is Amanda Cabrera, and I am beyond excited to be joining the School of Journalism and Mass Communication Education Abroad trip to Japan!

I’m currently a junior majoring in electronic media with a minor in communication studies at Texas State University. I come from a small South Texas town called Angleton. My dream job is to work for a big name sports TV broadcasting company as a news reporter, covering either football, tennis or volleyball! This trip marks two major firsts for me! This will be my first time traveling to Japan and my first time going out of the country.

Both my parents were stationed in Okinawa, Japan, while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Ever since I was little, my parents’ stories about mainland Japan made me want to experience it for myself. I was hesitant at first to join the SJMC Japan program, but with encouragement from my parents, I took the leap and now I feel confident and so ready to go!

I can’t wait to try all the amazing food, experience a completely different culture and communicate with people from a whole new perspective. I’m especially looking forward to riding the bullet train, participating in a traditional tea ceremony and watching a baseball game. I know this trip will be unforgettable and will improve my journey as a future journalist.

See you soon, Japan!
