Hello! My name is Gilbert D. Martinez, a professor of instruction in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State and the academic program director for SJMC Japan.
I’m proud to partner with my colleague Associate Professor of Instruction Sara Shields to provide SJMC Japan, an Education Abroad program that takes journalism and mass communication students to Tokyo, Hiroshima and Japan. This year marks the fifth time I’ve taken students to Japan in this program, including 2019, 2023 and 2025 with Professor of Instruction Jon Zmikly and 2024 with Shields.
I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Texas – Pan American in South Texas and a law degree from Fordham University School of Law in New York. I have taught at Texas State for 23 years, teaching media law and ethics, media writing, feature writing, editing for clear communication, university seminar and a free speech/free press class in the Honors College.
I live in Austin with my spouse, Raeanne, a legal editor, and our cat, Mimi.
