Hello, everyone, my name is Erika Costello, and I am a grad student here at Texas State University pursuing a master’s degree in digital media communication. I obtained my bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida in 2013, studying emerging media management. I also work at the university full-time as the social media and influencer marketing manager for TXST Marketing. I am wrapping up my first year of graduate studies and am super excited to be a part of the SJMC Japan 2026 team!

Being a dual citizen of the U.S. and Sweden, I have traveled to many places across Europe, Mexico, Canada, Scandinavia and Australia (18 countries to be exact). Traveling is my favorite pastime, and I’ve always wanted to add Asia to that list. I am looking forward mostly to seeing how the Japanese culture thrives in their everyday lives, trying new foods and gaining new experiences from across the world.

I’ve always been interested in exploring new parts of the world and challenging myself to get out of my comfort zone. When the opportunity presented itself to be a part of the team as the program assistant, I knew I had to apply right away – and I’m glad I did! I am especially grateful to Sara Shields and Gilbert D. Martinez, along with SJMC staff for selecting me to be this year’s assistant. During my undergrad courses, I did not get the chance to study abroad so this experience is one I’ve been wanting to do for a very long time!

I have spent most of my career working on digital and social media teams for large brands like the San Antonio Spurs, Whole Foods Market and Under Armour. While these roles and companies have given me some great career experiences and connections, I think my time at TXST has awarded me the most unique experiences that I never expected. I especially enjoy working with and guiding students to be the best versions of themselves, encouraging them to turn in great work, while also having fun in the meantime. I’m excited to see what this trip holds!
