Mae

Hi! My name is Mae Bennett. I’m a digital media innovation major in my junior year at Texas State University. Growing up, I spent a lot of time in Old Forge, New York, but I’ve lived in Texas for about six years now. I’ve traveled a lot with my family from a young age. I’ve seen the Panama Canal, volcanoes in Costa Rica and the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London. Likewise, Old Forge was a bit of a tourist town, so I’ve lived both sides of the tourist experience.

Having lived at a tourist destination, I’m familiar with people going out of their way to visit what has become mundane to me. Because of that, I’d like to get a feel for some of the more ordinary things in the places we visit. I’m excited to see the famous sites you hear about online, but I’m also interested in learning a little about what it’d be like to live in Japan every day.

Despite all the traveling I’ve done, Japan always seemed out of reach until I found out about the SJMC Japan study abroad program. I’ve played games and watched shows set in Japan, so I’m excited to visit some of the places I’ve seen online in person! I’ve been learning Japanese, so I’m also excited to put my skills to the test.
